What online poker equity means

Equity is a concept that plays one of the biggest roles in shaping poker strategies and calculating the moves.

Let me give you an example. Let’s say you and I are playing heads-up no limit poker. In televised shows of poker games, the audience at home knows what type of hand you and I have, because they show them on screen. Many of these shows also display a percentage of how likely it is for each of the hands to win. In other words, you could have the winning hand and not even know it! Those percentages show the average amount of times that specific hand will hold up to win after all the cards are dealt. These calculations are usually made with simulators that use a computer’s power to verify the outcome of very large numbers of possible sequences on the flop, turn and river.

That is what equity means – that specific percentage.  Of course, the equity for each hand will change once the flop comes, thus making that even an AA hand could have zero equity after the flop if someone achieves a straight flush. But since flopped straight flushes are rare, in the long run, the chances of achieving an AA hand will prevail.

How to use online poker equity

Now that I’ve explained what equity means, it’s time you learned how you can use it in your advantage. You have to bet for value before the cards are out. This is generally done even by beginners who do not know exactly why or when to do it.

For example, let’s say you have an Ace and a King on a board consisting of an Ace, a 9 and a deuce. Two other people are there with you on the flop and they both call your pre-flop raise. You get one caller and the other one folds. Now let’s analyze your reason for betting on the flop: you have figured out you have the best hand. It may be a good reason, but it’s not a very specific one. You may have the best hand, but unless they both fold, there still is a small chance you are betting on a losing hand by the river – one of them may be calling with a 7-2o and might be catching another deuce on the turn. If this occurs, you bet will cost you money, not win you any.

Given the hand your opponent has, there is a chance he will outdraw you, as he has five outs to win: three sevens and two deuces. The odds of this happening are of 40-5 against (meaning that 40 of the remaining cards won’t help him and 5 will). This translates into an 11% chance of being outdrawn on the turn. His winning chances are of 19%, meaning that we have an 8% chance of winning. These calculated numbers mean that we now have our equity in the pot.
